Ghana Poultry Farmers Association has blamed the high importation of poultry products in Ghana on the collapse of over 85% majority of poultry farms in the country.
According to the President of the Ashanti Regional Poultry Farmers Association, Boris Baidoo the collapsed farms were unable to bear the cost of production as it keeps going up.
“Look at the imports we make into our country which has collapsed 85% of our poultry farms at this moment in the county. The poultry industry is collapsing, people are unable to grow more birds, those of us who are still in the industry even find it difficult to price our products, especially the eggs…it is disturbing.” Mr Baidoo lamented.
He warned that if Ghana fails to put measures in place to protect local entities, the country may experience food shortage as the local industry keeps struggling to develop on its own.
“The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us the need to prepare ourselves to avoid future famine”.
Mr. Boris Baidoo reiterated that the government and major stakeholders have to hold a broader consultation on the poultry industry, the right amount to invest, support from the government and the understanding of poultry products by most Ghanaians.
“Ghanaians must first understand the benefits of eating eggs and the healthiness of home-grown chicken compared to the imported ones,” he added.
