MOFA On Alert Following Suspected Brown Cassava Steak Disease In Akatsi
The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) has issued an alert to cassava farmers in the country following a suspected disease known as brown cassava steak recorded in Akatsi in the Volta Region.
According to a report by the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the Department of Agriculture under the MOFA of the Akatsi South Municipal Assembly has advised farmers in the area to report any suspected incidents of rotten cassava roots on their farms.
The Director of Agriculture in the municipality, Charles Grunitzky revealed that his outfit has recorded five suspected cases of the ‘Cassava Brown Streak Disease’ which is caused by a virus.
He disclosed that about nine acres of cassava farm had been destroyed as a result of the virus.
“Farmers and the public are to report any such cases to the department immediately for prompt action to prevent any further spread.”
Mr Gruniztky assured farmers in that enclave that his outfit had already initiated urgent steps, including the use of clean planting materials, and farm hygiene to clear weeds, insects, and white flies to mitigate the situation.
Meanwhile, officials from the Ministry of Agriculture will visit the area to assess the situation.
